REVIEW: The L.A. Maybe – Dirty Damn Tricks

The L.A. Maybe – Dirty Damn Tricks

From the Carolinas, USA, come this 6-piece band that deliver some seriously foot-stomping rock ‘n’ roll! If you try to imagine that AC/DC and Guns N’ Roses had a love child, I’m pretty sure it would sound a lot like this! Lead singer Alvi Robinson actually auditioned to take Brian Johnson’s place in AC/DC back in 2016, so that will give you hint as to what to expect!

We kick off with Mr. Danger, a hard hitting bit of rock with a melodic twist that was the first single release from the album in January 2021. A great opener that sets the scene for the rest of the album.

Sucker Punch  hits you with awesome riffage and high energy that carries you along with a head-banging wall of sound. This was the second single released in February.

Track 3 is Oh Sugar and this has a very different pace to it. A great bit of Southern Rock that seems to bleed sunshine!

She’s Reckless continues with the Southern Rock feel that reminds me of British rockers Bad Touch. Great guitar break midway through adds a nice touch to this track.

Track 5, Peace Of Mind is a much more laid back number with a delightful piano line tinkling along in the background.

When I’m Gone continues with the gentler theme, and this is a truly delightful ballad with an awesome guitar solo. This is a song that makes you want to just close your eyes and allow yourself to drift along on a musical wave.

Ok, it’s time to wake up again! Track 7 is Take Me Away sees a return to the high energy rock experienced earlier. I guarantee that you’ll be singing along to the chorus on this one!

Sweet is a beautiful track, steeped in Southern smoke with spine-tingling vocal breaks.

Track 9 is Fake, guaranteed to get the blood pumping right from the off. The pace is truly relentless and will grab you by the short hairs and won’t let go until the final note!

The album closes with Up Next To You, and this track has serious swag. This bounces along with great repeated vocals in the background. A great finish to a fine album!

To sum up, if you like the aforementioned AC/DC, Guns N’ Roses or even Van Halen, you will love this album. It perfectly showcases the incredible versatility of these fine musicians as they draw on a number of musical styles whilst retaining their own definitive sound. I have no doubt listening to this that these guys will put on an incredible live show and I’ll certainly be first in line for a ticket!

Dirty Damn Tricks is to be released on 26th March 2021.
